Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg (Austria)

Welcome to a little virtual trip to Austria, Salzburg in particular. Why Austria? My birthday came around again without a fail, so instead of counting wrinkles I decided to count my blessings and treat myself to a bit of autumn magic.

With my husband, we hopped on a train from Vienna directly to Salzburg and in 2 hours we were already admiring the snowy peaks behind the windows.

The final destination was actually Germany, but we couldn’t get accommodation for the first night so decide to book something in Salzburg. I stumbled upon the Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron by chance and was really excited when I discovered they have a free room!

Who would want to miss a chance to play a princess for a day?

We arrived on a very gloomy and dark afternoon, so the pics below are taken on the following morning. The glory of autumn in it’s full beauty.

The main Schloss was peaking from behind glowing yellow trees and we quickly checked in the next door building where our room was too.

As I said the first day was rather dark and gloomy, so we took the most out of the following morning by a stroll among the trees, by the lake and in the hotel gardens.

Safe to say these views are hard to forget!

If you think you saw the gate below somewhere you are right!

The hotel was used as set location for The Sound of Music – a fun fact: the famous gate scene was not actually filmed directly here, but they made a replicate of the horse gates and filmed in a place closeby.

The hotel grounds are full of references to the movie heritage and the booklet you will get in the hotel will tell you lots more about it.

The hotel itself is privately owned so you can’t just stroll in for a quick view, it’s only accessible to guests. And what guests! It’s been hosting US presidents, movie stars and much more.

A must do shot on the swing – I suspect this is the easiest Instagram trap for anyone coming here, especially after you read the sign.

The photo doesn’t show it, but the sign lived up to its promise!

About a time to go in, what do you think?

Just in time for breakfast!

Served in a spectacular location.

If you get bored with the views inside, the balcony is still open with chairs prepared, so wrap up warm and you can sip your coffee while enjoying the stunning views towards the lake.

After a good 20 mins on balcony it was time to defrost again inside and peak inside the other rooms that are also available to guest to enjoy.

Starting with the Library.

It might be understatement calling this room a Library.

All guarded by the watchful eyes of the angels.

In addition to two of us, the morning sun wanted to also peak in.

I found my spot in the study.

I think this was the lavishly decorated Chinese room (if I remember correctly). Each room has a small information board which tells you a lot more about the furniture and short history.

As you would guess from the lack of details here I did not read them. It was gloriously sunny outside so we counted our losses and headed back out.

For a very last stroll to make sure I photographed every single tree and Schloss from each angle.

Soon after breakfast our taxi arrived and we headed further south to Germany.

I was completely in love with this place and no matter which season you visit, it will completely transform itself!

If I had only one negative remark, it would be the standard rooms available in the building next to the castle. They looked more like Premier Inn type of accommodation, without any character or relation to the Schloss. Very plain furniture and zero atmosphere. No fridge (or mini bar) or coffee facilities were also very disappointing for a hotel room at 150 eur / night.

If you want to stay in the Schloss itself, you need to pay for a suite which I believe start around 300 eur per night. Expensive, but a really nice treat if you can afford it!

For me the disappointing room was quickly forgotten thanks to the stunning grounds and Schloss itself. Bonus points for serving Prosecco at breakfast which came handy for my birthday celebrations!

Follow up here next time for a trip to Lake Konigssee in Germany and a boat ride on the cleanest lake in the country!
