The drive from Malaga airport to Estepona is pretty easy, via the AP-7. The only issue is the fact that it’s a toll road, so you will have to pay some fees.

The road runs along the coastline, alongside the A-7 which is a toll-free road, but it doesn’t run as far as Estepona (only up to Marbella). If you want to avoid some of the fees, you can take the A-7 from Malaga airport and join the AP-7 after Marbella.

The tolls paid are usually around 10 euros for this journey, but you can calculate the correct amount using the Spanish toll road calculator.

The driving route is marked on the map below – according to the estimates, it will take under an hour to drive there, depending on the traffic conditions.

3. TRAIN FROM MALAGA AIRPORT TO ESTEPONA

Unfortunately, the train network doesn’t run any further south of Fuengirola, and the only way to get to Estepona from Fuengirola is by car or bus.

If you still prefer to take the train from the airport, the local C-1 commuter train connects Malaga airport with Fuengirola. The journey will take around 30 minutes and the trains run every 20 minutes.

Once you get to Fuengirola’s main station, you can take one of the long-distance buses to Estepona (they go in direction of Algeciras).

The bus journey to Estepona usually takes around an hour, with two stops on the way.

More on the transport options between Fuengirola and Estepona is in this guide.

4. MALAGA AIRPORT TO ESTEPONA BY BUS

There is a direct bus connection between Malaga airport and Estepona, with up to 10 departures per day.

Bus Tickets Malaga Airport to Estepona

If you’re checking the times and prices, it’s best to put in your destination and dates on the Omio website, to get the most accurate information.

I found the other local timetables to be very unreliable.

Head over to the Omio website and enter your destination and dates, and a few bus options will pop up. You can buy the tickets in a few clicks and just show the QR code from your phone to the bus driver.

You can check the bus tickets by using the form below and entering your journey details.

Please remember you have to take your ID with you, they will ask to see it along with your ticket.

There are approximately 10 different bus connections available every day (the weekend schedule may vary).

The first bus leaves the airport at 8.55 am and the last one departs at 21.35pm.

The journey takes on average 1 hour and 10 minutes, with one stop in between in Marbella.

Alternative Bus Route from Malaga Main Station

In case the bus times available directly from the airport don’t work for you, you can also get to Malaga main bus station and take the bus from there. Normally you would have more connection options because not all the buses towards Estepona stop at Malaga airport.

To check the connections and times, just head over to the Avanza website and select Malaga Estacion de Autobuses as your departure point.

At the moment, there are between 14 to 16 connections per day, so much better option than the limited bus departures directly from the airport.

The total travel time varies between 1 hour and 30 minutes, and 2 hours depending on the connection you take.

The first bus from the main bus station leaves at 6.45 am and the last one at 21.15 pm, so it gives you a bit more flexibility.

How to get to Malaga bus station from the airport?

The easiest and fastest way to travel to the bus station is by taking the local commute train C-1 towards Malaga Centro. The train stop is just outside of the arrivals terminal, a 5-minute walk.

By the escalator stairs, you will see a ticket booth where you get a one-way ticket to Malaga Maria Zambrano. It’s a short 10-minute journey and will cost just a few euros.

Once you get off at Malaga Maria Zambrano, you simply walk across the road and you have arrived at the main bus station, they’re right next to each other.

Estepona Bus Station

Estepona has a very small bus station at the beginning of the town, it’s quite far off from the centre alongside a long stretch of the highway. I would imagine it’s probably 15 – 20 minute walk if you want to go there on foot.

Just behind the bus station is a taxi rank, almost hidden behind the bushes, where you can get a local taxi to your hotel or the old town.

The taxi to the old town would cost under 10 euros, depending on where you go.

There is very limited Uber service in Estepona, so I was able to get an uber to the bus station when there were no taxis available once we arrived.

The terminal building is small, but there are toilets, ticket machines and a small vending machine. A short walk away from the bus station towards the city centre is a big supermarket where you can get some sandwiches for your trip and other necessities.

Malaga Bus Station

If you decided to take one of the buses from Malaga bus station, just be prepared that it’s a very basic and dated station with almost no facilities.

Luckily it’s located right next to Malaga Maria Zambrano train station, which is like a mini shopping mall with lots of amenities and everything you might need ahead of your travel.
