1. Malaga to Torremolinos by Train

The train connection between Malaga and Torremolinos is serviced by the C-1 commuter train from Fuengirola, one that I’m very familiar with. I’ve been using the train for a few years now, having lived in Fuengirola and making regular trips towards Malaga.

So where do you take the train from and get the tickets?

Malaga Maria Zambrano Station

Even though the local C1 commuter trains go also to Malaga Centro, I would recommend using the Malaga Maria Zambrano station as it is much better equipped.

If you’re staying in the old town, on the other hand, the Malaga Centro is a walking distance to many of the place in the old town and might be a more convenient option for you. It’s also the departure station for the train so you’re guaranteed a free seat.

Where to Get Train Tickets

There are ticket machines by the entrance to the platforms, on both of the stations in Malaga.

In the machine, you can click the little flag in the bottom left corner to change the language to English. Select a day ticket and find Torremolinos in the list. The tickets cost just 2.70 euros one way, per person. You can pay by card or cash.

The machine will give you a printed ticket with a QR code that you scan at the gates. Some stations do not have gates, so don’t be surprised by that (Torreblanca for example).

There are no ticket checks on the train itself, you just need the ticket to get in and out of the station, the same as you do on a metro.

Train Facilities and Journey

The trains are very spacious with lots of room for luggage and rarely that crowded that you wouldn’t be able to get on. The train has also space for bikes and toilets.

There is usually a security guard on the train (not checking the tickets, just ensuring order) and masks are still compulsory on all forms of public transport in Spain (accurate as of spring 2023). They also recommend wearing masks at the station, but it’s not mandatory.

The trains run every 20 minutes or so, and the journey takes around 15 minutes.

The train stops at the following stations:

  • Malaga Centro
  • Malaga Maria Zambranoo
  • Victoria Kent
  • Guadalhorce
  • Malaga Airport
  • Plaza Mayor
  • Los Alamos
  • La Colina
  • Torremolinos

Train Timetables

The first trains leave around 5.00 am and the last ones before midnight, at 23.00 pm.

Please be careful where you check the timetables for these train connections as they are almost always not accurate.

The best way is to check the renfe website and their timetable here.

Train Station in Torremolinos

The train station in Torremolinos has been just recently renovated (late 2022), and has lifts for barrier-free access and ticket booths. It’s located in the centre of the old town, so if you’re heading to the coast it’s about 10 minutes walk down the hills.
