Malaga Weather in September: What to Expect?

Summer on Costa del Sol is really long and stretches from mid to late May until early or late October. The warm Mediterranean Sea is another reason why visiting Malaga in September is a great choice – it’s still warm enough for swimming, and much more peaceful and without crowds compared to August.

September marks the end of the busiest tourist season and it is the slow transition month into autumn. Even though I say autumn, it’s not what you would imagine in most places in Europe.

September weather in Malaga is still really warm, with only a handful of rainy days, and with temperatures that would still qualify for sunbathing, especially if you’re coming from Northern Europe.

Here is what you can expect weather-wise in Malaga in September.

Temperatures in September

The average temperatures are in the range of 22C to 28C, and if you hit a heat wave while visiting Malaga it might go over 30C.

The temperatures are nice and warm for this time of year, but not too hot that it would make you uncomfortable (unlike in August!). Keep in mind that the temperatures tend to climb down a bit in the early mornings and late evenings.

The night temperatures hover around 18C to 20C, so the nights are still nice and warm.

Rain in September

I live in Fuengirola, which is about 30km from Malaga, and from my experience, Malaga tends to catch more rain than my city. Even though rain does come in September, it’s usually a matter of a few hours before the clouds clear up and the sun comes out again.

This year, we even had a thunderstorm at the beginning of the month, but not more than a single day or two of rain.

It’s certainly not something you need to worry about if you’re looking to book your holiday in Malaga in September.

On average, you can expect 2 – 4 rainy days this month. Of course, it varies year on year, some years we’ve had gorgeous weather all month without a drop of rain, others like this year the rains come in very early.

Sunshine

Sunshine is abundant in September, with an average of 8 hours per day of sunshine. Bringing sun protection is a must!

Cloudy Days

The cloudy days vary and its hard to draw some averages. Generally, you can expect around a third of the month to be a bit more cloudy, but by that I mean there is still sun and a few clouds around, not clear blue skies all day long.

Humidity

The humidity levels begin to climb in September, reaching an average of around 60 – 70% depending on location within the city and coast.

Sea Temperatures

The average sea temperature is around 20C to 23C, again depending on the year.

It’s still warm enough to swim in, and many people do. The great thing about September is that the big crowds have already left, you don’t have to worry about sunning yourself on a crowded beach.

Sea Fog

A frequent sight along the coastline of Costa del Sol, a sea fog can sometimes appear even in the middle of the day and bring very cool air into the city. So far we’ve had this in August and there is a chance it might repeat itself in September. It usually clears up after a few hours, brining a sense of relief from the warm temperatures.

Malaga Weather in September: What to Pack?

If you want to stay comfortable in September, you will be fine in your summer clothes, with a couple of light jackets for the early mornings and late evenings.

In terms of shoes, you don’t need to worry about bringing anything water-proof, summer shoes are perfectly fine to wear nearly all month around.

If the weather forecast shows some rain while you’re visiting, you can bring an umbrella but it’s unlikely you will need it. The weather forecast changes every hour, and even though rain might be showing for a few days, it might pass just outside of the city and you never see the sight of it (which is very often the case).

Other essentials include sun lotion, hat (if you prefer), a light jacket or cardigan for the evenings, a swimming suit and other summer clothing.
