VEGAN & VEGETARIAN OPTIONS

A little note for those who come to this meat heaven looking for some alternatives (I count myself among them!).

Traditionally, Spanish cuisine heavily relies on meat, and in Andalusia, the Iberian ham would be one of the highlights.

If you’re on a vegan or vegetarian diet, you will struggle to find a traditional restaurant with many options. I know it’s disappointing, but that’s the reality.

In my experience, finding mainly vegan tapas options is very hard; you should contact the tour operator and let them know your dietary requirements in advance. Keep in mind they might not be able to cater to you.

For vegan friends, I would recommend going the DIY route and finding vegan-friendly tapas bars or restaurants with more options. You can also book a private tour guide and request a vegan friendly tapas food tour. There a quite a few vegan options in Marbella, where they will happily take you.

If you’re a pescatarian and eat fish, you will have more flexibility and opportunities to taste the local fish.

THE TALE OF PAELLA

Paella is a traditional rice dish originating from the province of Valencia.

So what is it doing on the menus in Marbella? Well, it’s pretty cheap to make and easy to sell to tourists.

I know you will see it advertised everywhere in Marbella and the coast of Costa del Sol, but you’re unlikely to find a delicious Paella in these parts of Spain.

Moreover, you are very likely to pay a premium for what will be just rice with some veggies and frozen seafood thrown on top.

Wines of Malaga Region

Marbella is part of the Malaga region, which rich in different wine varieties, specializing mainly in sweet wine.

Malaga has three different DO, places of origin for the wines: 1) Malaga – mostly known for sweet wine, 2) Sierra de Malaga – white and red wine, and 3) Pasas de Malaga, mostly known for raisins.

Wine, as I always say, is a matter of taste and personal preference, so I won’t be recommending any particular grapes or varieties to try.

Most of the restaurants are focused on locally produced wines, so you will get a chance to sample some of them whether you take part of a food tour or not.

In most supermarkets, you will also find only minimal selection of local Spanish wines, at least the ones from Andalusia. You will have more luck in dedicated Bodega shops.

What is the best tour to visit a winery near Marbella?

There are quite a few wineries accessible from Marbella. You can head up north near the village of Ronda, or explore the Malaga wine region in wine villages like Antequera or Manilva. I recommend this winery tour in Manilva with sunset wine tasting and this winery & lunch tour in Antequera.
