OXO Gaming Museum in Malaga: Worth a Visit?

Have you heard of the OXO Gaming Museum in Malaga?

I bet probably not!

It’s not exactly one of the top 10 attractions in Malaga, but in my opinion, it very well deserves to be added.

I visited last weekend with my kids and my husband – not exactly my first pick for a weekend activity, but it caught my husband’s attention and my Minecraft obsessed older son couldn’t agree more.

I wanted to share some details in this article because I was more impressed by the museum than I thought I would be.

What is OXO Museum?

OXO Museum, as I call it, is officially known as the OXO Museo Videojuego de Malaga (Video Game Museum of Malaga) and it’s located right in the heart of the old town (I will share location & ticket details at the end of the article).

This remarkable institution is not just a museum; it’s a journey through the evolution of video games, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane for some, and an enlightening adventure into the roots of modern digital entertainment for others.

Spanning the earliest days of pixelated arcade classics to the immersive experiences of contemporary gaming, the OXO Gaming Museum is a treasure trove that celebrates the rich history and the art of video games.

Established with the aim of preserving and showcasing the vast and dynamic realm of video games, the museum is a testament to the industry’s rapid evolution.

What’s in OXO Museum?

The museum has an extensive collection that includes rare consoles, vintage arcade machines, and a plethora of games that have left an indelible mark on the culture and technology of gaming.

Kids of any age can marvel at the evolution of gaming hardware, from the humble beginnings of the Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600 to the sophisticated PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, tracing the technological advancements that have shaped the gaming world.

The museum also delves into the cultural impact of video games, exploring how they have influenced music, movies, and art over the decades.

Special exhibitions and events focus on the role of video games in society, including their contributions to education, their burgeoning role in competitive sports (esports), and their capacity to foster community and connectivity across the globe.

Is it Worth a Visit?

Oh yes!!!

I don’t do video games but I loved this place!

The best bit is the fact that all the exhibits are interactive, so you can spend up to 2 hours in the museum playing all the games on display.

From the iconic Pac-Man and Space Invaders to the groundbreaking Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, you can play your way through history, experiencing the evolution of gameplay, graphics, and storytelling firsthand.

I’ve seen tiny kids, teenagers and dads having the time of their lives, jumping from one console to the next and re-living the old fashioned fun of video games.

Bonus Tip:

If your little one is sensitive to lights & noisy environments, you might want to ask the staff if you can skip the first room which is just an immersive 3D presentation (very loud with lots of moving scenes). I found it personally uncomfortable and so did my two kids. It lasts 5 minutes.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the OXO Gaming Museum in Málaga offers a unique blend of nostalgia, education, and interactive fun, making it an invaluable resource for understanding the past, present, and future of gaming.

Whether you’re a hardcore gamer, a casual player, or simply curious about the digital world, the OXO Gaming Museum promises an enriching and enjoyable experience that highlights the universal appeal and enduring legacy of video games.

I can guarantee your kids (or husband) will absolutely love it! Mine are already asking to visit again! =)

Visiting the OXO Museum in Malaga

Tickets:

Buy online – 15 euros for adults, 12 euros for kids (age 5 – 13). We paid 42 euros for a family of 4 with a 2 year old child. You can also buy them at the entrance.

Location: Plaza del Siglo 2, old town Malaga.

When to Visit: I highly recommend getting tickets for the first available slots on the day. The museum has a crowd control in place so its never packed, but you will get more chances to play and explore in peace if you’re one of the first ones to arrive there.

Is it Suitable for Kids: My two year old really liked it, apart from the loud interactive experience at the beginning. I would recommend this for ages from 3 years and up so they can enjoy it fully.
