Tapas in Malaga: All You Need to Know
So what are some of the culinary highlights you shouldn’t miss when visiting Malaga? Here is a short list of the most traditional tapas dishes you should try:
- Gambas Pil Pil (prawns in spicy oil)
- Boquerones
- Avocado Salad
- Spanish omelet
- Croquettes
- Montaditos (small sandwiches)
- Iberian ham
- Cured cheese
- Porra Antequerana
- Berenjenas con Miel
- Ensalada Malagueña
VEGAN & VEGETARIAN OPTIONS
A little note for those who come to this meat heaven looking for some alternatives (I count myself among them!).
Traditionally, Spanish cuisine is heavily reliant on meat, and in Andalusia, the Iberian ham would be one of the highlights.
If you’re on a vegan or vegetarian diet, you will struggle finding a standard restaurant with many options to choose from. I know it’s disappointing, but that’s the reality.
In my experience, finding especially vegan tapas options is very hard, you should therefore contact the tour operator and let them know your dietary requirements in advance. Keep in mind they might not be able to cater for you.
For vegan friends, I would recommend going the DIY route and finding vegan friendly tapas bars or restaurants with more options to choose from.
If you’re a pescatarian and eat fish, you will have more flexibility and opportunities to taste the local fish.
THE TALE OF PAELLA
Paella is a traditional rice dish originating from the province of Valencia.
So what is it doing on the menus in Malaga? Well, it’s pretty cheap to make and easy to sell to tourists.
I know you will see it advertised everywhere in Malaga and the coast of Costa del Sol, but you’re unlikely to find a delicious Paella in these parts of Spain.
Moreover, you are very likely to pay a premium for what will be just rice with some veggies and frozen seafood thrown on top.
TAPAS BAR EXPERIENCE
I have to add this section to manage your expectations a little bit.
Me personally, I love sitting down in a nice cosy restaurant with a selection of tapas to taste, accompanied by nice wine in a relaxing atmosphere. Tapas bars are anything but that!
Most of the good ‘local’s favourite’ places have standing room only, are completely crowded so you have to shout over each other to get your order, and way too noisy to have a conversation with your companion.
It is part of the experience and the way to do tapas.
If you book a tour, you will be in good hands though as the local guides are experienced enough to take you to places where you have plenty of space to enjoy your food in peace!
Wines of Malaga
Malaga is a region rich in different wine varieties, specialising in sweet wine varieties.
Malaga has three different DO, places of origin for the wines: 1) Malaga – mostly known for sweet wine, 2) Sierra de Malaga – white and red wine, and 3) Pasas de Malaga, mostly known for raisins.
Wine, as I always say, is a matter of taste and personal preference, so I won’t be recommending any particular grapes or varieties to try.
Most of the restaurants are focusing on the locally produced wines, so you will get a chance to sample some of them whether you take part of a food tour or not.
In most of the supermarkets you will also find only very limited selection of local Spanish wines, at least the ones from Andalusia. You will have more luck in dedicated Bodega shops.
