Malaga Wine Tour vs Wine Tasting

Which one should you pick?

This article will cover options for both wine tours and wine tastings.

The difference is very subtle, but wine tours usually are a combination of tapas tasting and wine tasting, while wine tasting experiences focus more on sampling a bigger variety of different wines, and are usually done in local wineries.

You might still get some nibbles with your wine tasting, but it’s not going to be a more filling meal like with wine tours.

Let’s look at wine tasting options first, followed by wine tour picks.

Best Pick for: Malaga Wine Tasting

In this section, you will find three great options for wine-tasting experiences.

Two of them in a winery not far from Malaga, and the last option in central Malaga for those who want something local.

Malaga Wine Museum

Another convenient way to explore the wines of the region is by visiting the local wine museum in Malaga.

The museum is in the center of the old town, in a gorgeous 18th century building that used to be the Palacio de Biedmas.

It contains exhibitions from the history of wine production in Malaga and features many of the local wineries. For a modest entrance fee, you also get a tasting of 2 different wines. Guided tours are also available.

Opening hours: 10 am to 5pm, Monday to Friday

Location: Plaza de los Viñeros 1, Malaga

Entrance fees: 6 euros for adults, which includes tasting of 2 local wines. Tickets available on the spot or on their website (currently doesn’t work).

Wines of Malaga

Malaga is a region rich in different wine varieties, specializing in sweet wine varieties.

Malaga has three different DO, places of origin for the wines: 1) Malaga – mostly known for sweet wine, 2) Sierra de Malaga – white and red wine, and 3) Pasas de Malaga, mostly known for raisins.

Wine, as I always say, is a matter of taste and personal preference, so I won’t be recommending any particular grapes or varieties to try.

In most of the supermarkets, you will also find only a very limited selection of local Spanish wines, at least the ones from Andalusia. You will have more luck in dedicated Bodega shops.
