Vineyard Tours in Malaga: Top Tips

First things first: there is no need to research the vineyards near Malaga.

The last thing you want to do is to drive to the winery with a rental car – who is going to do all the wine tasting?

In this article, you will find vineyard tours that include pick-up from Malaga city center, so you can enjoy wine tourism and the best wine experiences without worrying about local traffic or drinking limits.

There are no vineyards directly in Malaga, so each tour involves a short drive out of the city, included in the tour price.

For those who want to venture into even further in Malaga region, and want a truly unique experience, I have included a day trip to Ronda in the list too.

Tips for Booking Vineyard Tours from Malaga

As you can see from the selection above, the best places for wine lovers that involve authentic vineyard settings are pretty limited.

Most visitors of Malaga are interested in booking a tapas tour or Malaga wine tour, which are both easily accessible from the city.

In case of vineyard tours, you have the option to book an organised tour from the options above, or find a local winery yourself and drive there.

Visiting a local winery will allow you not only to get familiar with the different varieties of the local wines, but also enjoy a beautiful scenery and spectacular views on your way.

It’s a great option for a day trip out of Malaga, but please keep in mind the legal driving limits (currently 0.3 gr of alcohol per liter of blood, and 0.15 milligrams per liter of exhaled alcohol).

Here are some practical tips to keep in mind when booking your tour:

  • most vineyard tours start in the morning hours (10am) or around lunch time, so it’s worth checking that this will work for you
  • comfortable shoes and sun protection are a must
  • winery visits usually entail also visiting the vineyard grounds, tasting rooms, maturing rooms and a selection of tapas to accompany the food – you won’t get this experience on a local wine tour in the city
  • if you’re worried about the weather spoiling your trip, all of these tours come with 24 hour cancellation policy so you have plenty of time to adjust and change your plans
  • most tours are offered in English and Spanish language, please check carefully that the selected date and time is offered in the language you want

Malaga Wine Museum

Another convenient way to explore the wines of the region is by visiting the local wine museum in Malaga.

The museum is in the center of the old town, in a gorgeous 18th century building that used to be the Palacio de Biedmas.

It contains exhibitions from the history of wine production in Malaga and features many of the local wineries. For a modest entrance fee, you also get a tasting of 2 different wines. Guided tours are also available.

Opening hours: 10 am to 5pm, Monday to Friday

Location: Plaza de los Viñeros 1, Malaga

Entrance fees: 6 euros for adults, which includes tasting of 2 local wines. Tickets available on the spot or on their website (currently doesn’t work).

Wines of Malaga

Malaga is a region rich in different wine varieties, specializing in sweet wine varieties.

Malaga has three different DO, places of origin for the wines: 1) Malaga – mostly known for sweet wine, 2) Sierra de Malaga – white and red wine, and 3) Pasas de Malaga, mostly known for raisins.

Wine, as I always say, is a matter of taste and personal preference, so I won’t be recommending any particular grapes or varieties to try.

In most of the supermarkets, you will also find only a very limited selection of local Spanish wines, at least the ones from Andalusia. You will have more luck in dedicated Bodega shops.
