7 Interesting Facts About Calle Larios
1. The Name Game
Calle Larios is officially known as Calle Marqués de Larios.
It’s named after Manuel Domingo Larios, who was the 2nd Marquis of Larios. The Larios family was instrumental in developing the 19th-century textile industry in Málaga, and their legacy didn’t stop there.
They played a huge role in urban development, and this street is a tip of the hat to their contributions.
2. A Fashionable Address
Since its inauguration in 1891, Calle Larios has been the place to be.
Picture this: a boulevard that quickly became the go-to spot for the affluent, a symbol of economic and social growth. It’s lined with beautiful 19th-century buildings, now home to chic boutiques, popular international brands, and quaint cafes.
If you’re looking to shop till you drop or just enjoy some prime people-watching, Calle Larios has got you covered.
3. Art on Display
While you’re strolling, don’t forget to look up and around.

5. A Pedestrian Paradise
In 2002, Calle Larios said “adiós” to cars, becoming a pedestrian-only haven.
This transformation has made it even more inviting for locals and tourists alike to wander, relax, and soak in the atmosphere without the buzz of traffic. It’s a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively—in the heart of the city.
6. A Meeting Spot for All
At the southern end of Calle Larios, you’ll find the famous Plaza de la Constitución, a historic square that’s been a focal point of city life for centuries.
This is where people meet, celebrations are held, and life happens. It’s the perfect spot to rest your shopping bags, enjoy a coffee, and watch the world go by.

Calle Larios During Christmas Time
Even though I have been living next to Malaga for many years now, I never actually made it there to see the Christmas lights, until last year.
Not that I am not interested, but I was always put off by the massive crowds gathering there.
Each year, Malaga puts on a spectacular display of Christmas lights at Calle Larios, an event that draws thousands of people to this relatively small space.
If you want to get the most out of it, make sure you arrive there a week or two after the official opening and remember that the light show is only at certain times, which are: 6.30pm, 8pm and 10pm every night (except Christmas eve and NY eve).
This year, in 2024, the lights will be around 28th November 2024, with the final date to be confirmed closer to the festive season. You can check updates on this website, but I will also do my own article closer to Christmas time.
Here are some photos from last years display, it was pretty spectacular.
Practical Tips
Even though Calle Larios might be the prime spot for people watching, there are almost no restaurants or cafes directly on the streets.
You will find mostly shops and boutiques on the main street, and smaller cafes and restaurants scattered in the small streets spilling from the main shopping street.
On the main square where Calle Larios starts, you will find more options to sit down and enjoy some people watching.
