Is December a good month to visit Benalmadena?

December is not the best month to visit Benalmadena, because the weather is pretty unstable and it’s not that warm anymore.

However, if you’re after a travel bargain and want to spend a Christmas break somewhere warm, it certainly ticks both boxes.

Even though December is colder than the earlier months, it is still considered pretty warm compared to most of the places in Europe as the temperatures hover between 10C and 15C.

There is also a decent chance of good weather, but you have to count on the fact that long-term weather forecasts won’t be very accurate and you need to be prepared to change your plans.

What to Expect for Benalmádena in December

In addition to the weather overview, below you will find some practical tips that will help you plan your trip for December.

Low Tourism Season

In December, Benalmadena’s tourist traffic is significantly lower than it is throughout the rest of the year.

Most people visit in the warmer months, meaning that in December, you’ll have the beaches, eateries and attractions mostly to yourself.

Less Crowds at Popular Monuments

December is a great time to explore some of the most popular monuments in Southern Spain and plan a day trip from Benalmadena.

If you don’t like the hassle of driving, navigating the local traffic and finding parking in big cities, you can book an affordable day tour with a local company. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Limited Services

The beach rentals (chairs and umbrellas) remain closed from the end of October for much of Costa del Sol, and so are the other beach facilities like showers.

Hotels in the area are mostly open, some smaller ones may close for the winter season. Restaurants will remain fully open, apart from the beachside chiringuitos which tend to close in November.

Affordable Prices

With smaller crowds come lower prices, especially in terms of accommodation, restaurant meals and other shopping. If you visit Benalmadena in December, you may be able to scoop up a deal that would be out of your price range at another time of year.

Fast Changes in Weather Conditions

Winter on Costa del Sol brings fast changes in weather conditions, so you need to be prepared and have alternative plans for your day ready.

What to Wear in Benalmadena in December

Prepare for rainy and windy weather, with a weatherproof jacket and good waterproof shoes.

During the day it can be very pleasant in the sun, so the best choice is to bring some layers that you can put on later in the day when it gets colder.

Don’t forget sun protection, you can definitely get a sunburn even in December.

If you’re staying in an apartment and not a hotel, I also recommend packing some slippers since almost none of the properties have central heating, and the floors are very cold.

What’s Happening in Benalmadena in December

Benalmadena is well into its off season by December, but that doesn’t mean the city doesn’t keep busy. Local events are a great way to meet people and learn about Spanish culture.

Benalmadena celebrates the holidays in December, starting with a large Christmas Fair that lasts most of the month and into January. The fair includes games, children’s activities and performances, making it a great option for the whole family.
